Intro Courses

For anyone interested in starting either Kendo, Iaido or Naginata for the first time please see the information below regarding the next introductory courses for each of the respective arts. 

All of the courses are designed for people who have had no experience in any of these arts… or any other martial art… and are suited for absolute beginners.

You can arrange a visit to the dojo during any of our normal training sessions (see the Arts page for our training session times). If you have any questions or would like to arrange a visit, email the club secretary at secretary@melbournebudokai.com.au.

Kendo

Beginners Course

Course Days: 

Wednesdays 7:00pm to 9:00pm and Sundays 5:00pm to 7:30pm.
9 weeks, twice weekly.

The last two Sundays of the course are with the main training group (9:30am to 11:30am).

Cost (approx.):  $265 for adults, $190 for students (with valid ID card), $150 for kids 17 years old and below.

Course Dates for 2025

Our courses for 2025 are now closed and our next course will be in February 2026.

You will need to purchase a shinai (bamboo sword) in addition to the course cost.

Minimum age: 8 years old.

Iaido

Course Dates 2025

Our 2025 intro courses are now completed. The next course will be in February/March 2026.

Details:
Cost (tbc):  $50
Duration:  4 weeks
Course Days:  Tuesdays and Thursdays 6:00pm to 7:30pm.

Further information

You will be provided with a bokken (a wooden sword) to use.

Minimum age: 16 years old.

We are limited with the number of people we can accept into our iaido courses.

Naginata

Course Dates 2026

  • Sat 7th Feb – 7th Mar
  • Sat 3rd Oct – 31 Oct

Details:

Cost:  $60 for adults, $40 for students/kids (minimum age 12 years)
Duration:  5 weeks
Course Days:  Saturdays 9:30am to 11:30pm.

First hour will be for the beginners group only, second hour will be integrated with regular members. 11.30-12.30 is reserved for members but beginners will be welcome to stay and quietly observe.
